Vitus Bering Bio
Vitus Jonassen Bering (baptized August 5, 1681, died December 19, 1741), also known as Ivan Ivanovich Bering, was a Danish cartographer and explorer in the service of Russia, as well as an officer in the Russian navy. He is known for having led two Russian expeditions, the first to Kamchatka and the great northern expedition, exploring the northeast coast of the Asian continent and, from there, the west coast of the North American continent. The Bering Strait, Bering Sea, Bering Island, Bering Glacier and Bering Land Bridge were named in his honor. Having set sail at the age of 18, Bering traveled extensively over the next eight years, while undergoing naval training in Amsterdam. In 1704, he joined the expanding Russian navy of Tsar Peter I (Peter the Great). After serving in the navy in important but non-combat roles during the Great Northern War, Bering resigned in 1724 to avoid the continuing embarrassment of his inferior rank with Anna, his wife of eleven years; on his retirement, he was promoted to first captain. Bering was allowed to retain his rank when he rejoined the Russian navy later that year. He was chosen by the Tsar as captain of the First Kamchatka Expedition, an expedition that set out from Russian outposts on the Kamchatka Peninsula northwards, with the mission of mapping the new regions visited and establishing whether Asia and America shared a common land border. Bering set out from St. Petersburg in February 1725 at the head of a 34-man expedition, assisted by lieutenants Martin Spangberg and Aleksei Chirikov. The expedition added men as it made its way to Okhotsk, encountering many difficulties (not least the lack of food) before arriving at the settlement's location. From there, the men sailed to the Kamchatka peninsula, prepared new ships and headed north (repeating a little-documented voyage by Semyon Dezhnyov eighty years earlier). In August 1728, Bering felt that they had sufficient proof of the existence of a clear sea between Asia and America, which he had not seen during the voyage. For this first expedition, Bering was rewarded with money, prestige and promotion to the noble rank of frigate captain. He immediately began preparations for a second voyage. Returning to Okhotsk with a much larger, better prepared and more ambitious expedition, Bering set off for North America in 1741. The expedition sighted Mount Saint Elias and passed Kodiak Island. A storm separated the ships, but Béring caught sight of Alaska's southern coast, and a landing was made on or near Kayak Island. Unfavorable conditions forced Béring to return, but he documented some of the Aleutian Islands on the way back. One of the sailors died and was buried on one of these islands, and Béring gave his name to the Shumagin group of islands. Bering himself became too ill to command his ship, which was eventually forced to take refuge on an uninhabited island in the Commander Islands group (Komandorskiye Ostrova), in the southwestern Bering Sea. On December 19, 1741, Vitus Bering died on the island, which was named Bering Island in his honor, near the Kamchatka peninsula, apparently of scurvy (which has been disputed), along with 28 men from his company.
