Steve Spurrier Bio

Stephen Orr Spurrier (born April 20, 1945) is a former American soccer player and coach. Spurrier was head coach of three college teams and two professional teams. He was also an excellent college soccer player and spent a decade playing professionally in the National Football League (NFL). Spurrier retired from coaching in 2015 and is now an ambassador and consultant for the University of Florida Athletic Department. Spurrier was born in Miami Beach, Florida, and raised in Tennessee, where he was a multi-sport and all-state athlete in high school. He graduated from the University of Florida, where he was the starting quarterback for the Florida Gators for three seasons. Spurrier won the Heisman Trophy in his final season in 1966, was voted an All-American in 1965 and 1966, and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame as a player in 1986. Spurrier was drafted in the first round (third overall) of the 1967 NFL draft by the San Francisco 49ers, and played primarily as a backup quarterback and punter from 1967 to 1975. In 1976, the expansion Tampa Bay Buccaneers traded Spurrier, and he was the team’s starting quarterback for most of its inaugural season. After retiring as a player, Spurrier returned to college in 1978 as an offensive assistant at Florida under Doug Dickey. Dickey and his entire staff were fired after the season, and Spurrier became quarterbacks coach at Georgia Tech in 1979, under Pepper Rodgers, also fired after the season. In each of his first two coaching positions, Spurrier had been recruited to help transition from a run-based wishbone offense to more pass-oriented pro set attacks. But as an inexperienced coach, he was rarely allowed to run plays. In 1980, Spurrier was hired as offensive coordinator at Duke University by coach Red Wilson, who let him run the Blue Devils’ offense. Although his offensive teams were often less talented than the opposition, Spurrier’s wide-open, pass-oriented offense broke several school and conference records during his three seasons at Duke, and Blue Devils quarterback Ben Bennett finished his career with the most passing yards in NCAA history. In 1983, Spurrier accepted his first head coaching position with the Tampa Bay Bandits of the United States Football League (USFL), making him, at 37, the youngest head coach in professional soccer. The Bandits enjoyed success, going 35-19 in three seasons, and Spurrier’s "Bandit Ball" offense was popular with fans. However, the team disappeared along with the rest of the USFL after the 1985 season. Spurrier returned to Duke University as head coach of the Blue Devils in 1987, and his teams broke many records set during his tenure as offensive coordinator. In 1989, Spurrier's Duke team won the program's first conference championship since 1962 and its most recent to date. On January 1, 1990, Spurrier returned to the University of Florida to become head coach of the Gators. Over the next twelve seasons, he led the Florida program to unprecedented success, including the first six Southeastern Conference (SEC) championships and the first consensus national championship in 1996. His wide-open offensive scheme (nicknamed "Fun 'n' Gun"") continued to produce in Florida, and his teams and individual players set numerous school and conference records. In 1996, Spurrier became the first Heisman Trophy winner to coach a Heisman Trophy winner when Florida quarterback Danny Wuerffel won the trophy. Spurrier unexpectedly left Florida immediately after the 2001 season to try his hand at coaching in the NFL, but his tenure as head coach of the Washington Redskins was largely disappointing and he resigned after two seasons. In 2005, he returned to college as head coach of the South Carolina Gamecocks. Although his offenses weren't as prolific as in Florida, Spurrier also took the South Carolina program to unprecedented levels of success, leading the Gamecocks to three of the four 10-win seasons in program history, as well as the school's only 11-win seasons, top-10 finishes in the polls and its only appearance in the SEC championship game. On October 12, 2015, Spurrier announced his resignation as South Carolina head coach, effective immediately, stating that he felt the program was headed in the wrong direction and that it was time to "fire myself." He retired as the winningest coach in Florida and South Carolina history, and is second only to Bear Bryant as the most winning coach in SEC history. In July 2016, Spurrier returned to the University of Florida as an ambassador and consultant to the athletic department. In September 2016, his name was added to the Gators' field, changing its official name to Steve Spurrier-Florida Field at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.
