What is Astrocartography: Mapping Planetary Influences Across the Globe
Summary
Astrocartography is a branch of astrology that charts the intersections of yourl planets with geographic locations around the world. It shows where each planet in your birth chart aligns with key points, such as the Ascendant, Midheaven, Descendant, or Imum Coeli – activating specific areas of life like career, relationships, or personal development. This method helps to see where different aspects of their chart are emphasized, offering guidance for travel, relocation, or self-reflection, without claiming to predict exact outcomes. With Astroline, you can explore your personal planetary lines to understand how your chart interacts with different places on the globe.
Astro-cartography (also known as Astrocartography or ACG) is a specialized branch of local astrology that superimposes a person’s chart onto a geographical map of the world. This method is used to understand how a person will feel and what events and energy changes they may experience depending on where they travel or live.
The foundations of this technique (originally called “Astro-Geography”) were discovered by astrologers Donald Bradley and Gary Duncan in the early 20th century. The modern system of astrocartography, widely used today, was officially developed and popularized by astrologer Jim Lewis in the 1970s.
Previously, in order to understand how a person would fare in a new city, astrologers had to recalculate the entire natal chart for that specific location. Jim Lewis created ACG to simplify this process: the planets from the natal chart are displayed as continuous lines on a world map.
These lines show the places on Earth where the Sun, Moon, and nine planets were located exactly at one of the four main astrological angles at the moment of a person’s birth. The ACG chart includes 40 lines (four for each planet):
| Line Type | Description | Effect / Meaning |
| Ascendant Lines | Curved lines showing where the planet rose on the eastern horizon. | Moving to such a line is like being transported to your birthplace with the planet in the First House. |
| Descendant Lines | Lines where the planet set on the western horizon. | Influences the Seventh House, affecting relationships and partnerships. |
| Midheaven Lines (MC) | Vertical north-south lines showing where the planet was directly overhead at the moment of birth. | Highlights career, status, and public life; the planet’s traits manifest strongly in these areas. |
| Imum Coeli Lines (IC) | Vertical north-south lines showing where the planet was directly below the Earth. | Affects home, family, and private life; reveals foundational emotional influences. |
With the ACG chart, you can quickly see which places are saturated with the energy of specific planets. Planets are especially strong at the four corners, so moving or visiting a place under a planet’s line manifests its archetypal qualities in your life.
| Planet / Line | Symbolism / Meaning | Effect / Example |
| Jupiter | Wealth, generosity, abundance, good fortune | Moving to a Jupiter line can promote financial success or luck. Example: Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis’ Jupiter line ran through Greece, where she married a wealthy man. |
| Venus | Beauty, harmony, romance, creativity | Traveling along a Venus line can bring creative inspiration, pleasant experiences, or romantic encounters. |
| Mars | Activity, drive, determination, competitiveness | Mars energy makes a person more active, motivated, or competitive in that location. |
Astrocartography is useful for planning trips, choosing a place to move, or assessing where a business will be successful. It can also warn of “stress lines” where difficulties or resistance are possible.
Interestingly, it is not necessary to physically relocate: you can use the energies of the planets remotely through contacts, connections, and online business with people in these regions.
