Thomas Cromwell Bio
Thomas Cromwell, 1st Earl of Essex KG PC (/ˈkrɒmwəl/ or /ˈkrɒmwɛl/; c. 1485 - July 28, 1540) was an English lawyer and statesman who was chief minister to King Henry VIII of England from 1532 to 1540. Cromwell was one of the most ardent and powerful advocates of the English Reformation. He was instrumental in having the king’s marriage to Queen Catherine of Aragon annulled, so that Henry could legally marry Anne Boleyn. Henry failed to obtain papal approval for the annulment in 1534, so Parliament approved the king’s claim to be supreme head of the Church of England, giving him the authority to annul his own marriage. Thereafter, Cromwell charted an evangelical, reforming course for the Church of England from the unique positions of spiritual vicegerent and vicar general. During his rise to power, Cromwell made many enemies, including his former ally Anne Boleyn. He played an important role in her downfall. He later fell from grace after arranging the king's marriage to the German princess Anne of Cleves. Cromwell hoped the marriage would breathe new life into the Reformation in England, but Henry found his new bride unattractive and the marriage turned out to be a disaster for Cromwell, ending in an annulment six months later. Cromwell was indicted under an indictment and executed for treason and heresy on Tower Hill on July 28, 1540, and the king later expressed regret at having lost his chief minister. Until the 1950s, historians downplayed Cromwell's role as a doctrinaire pirate who was little more than an agent of the despotic King Henry VIII. Geoffrey Elton, however, presented him as the central figure of the Tudor governmental revolution in The Tudor Revolution (1953). Elton presents Cromwell as the presiding genius, far more than the king, in breaking with Rome and creating the laws and administrative procedures that reshaped post-Reformation England. Elton wrote that Cromwell was responsible for translating royal supremacy into parliamentary terms, creating powerful new government bodies to take charge of Church lands and removing medieval features of central government. Subsequent historians agree with Elton on Cromwell's importance, but not with his claims of "revolution". Leithead (2004) writes: "Against considerable opposition, he won acceptance for the king's new powers, created a more united and easily governable kingdom, and provided the crown, at least temporarily, with a very substantial land endowment" ;
